The book "Left Behind" explores the crisis of animal abandonment, a problem that continues to significantly impact Portugal. With approximately 931,000 abandoned dogs and cats, according to the ICNF (Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests), the book addresses the multifaceted challenges posed by this issue, ranging from ethical dilemmas and public health concerns to the strain on local communities. Through its narrative, Left Behind not only exposes the harsh realities faced by abandoned animals but also highlights inspiring initiatives, such as the “Green December” campaign, which aims to raise awareness and promote the humane treatment of animals. This work invites readers to reflect on their responsibilities and to participate in building a more compassionate society, where animal welfare becomes an integral part of collective progress.
